Steven Flanders

Steven Flanders assures that Cass Gilbert was more than just an architect who designed a magnificent building on the banks of the Kanawha River.

Flanders helped put Gilbert's place in history in perspective during an interview that's featured in "A Moving Monument: The West Virginia State Capitol." "At the time he designed your state Capitol, he was without a doubt the most important architect in the world," Flanders says.

Flanders knows his stuff when it comes to the life and work of the designer of the present day Capitol. He has done extensive research and helped author a book about Gilbert. The book is entitled, "Cass Gilbert, Life and Work: Architect of the Public Domain." It was published by W.W. Norton and Company Inc. and edited by Flanders and Barbara Christen.

The author also talks in the documentary about how West Virginia's present day Capitol in Charleston is close to the geographic center of West Virginia and "expresses a kind of centrality of West Virginia and what West Virginia stands for."
